Connecting services

The comprehensive area assessment will come into force in April 2009, and the first reports for all areas will be published in November 2009. The second joint consultation document on comprehensive area assessment which was published on 29 July 2008, sets out a new approach to the assessment of local services and focuses on outcomes for citizens.

Ofsted has worked with the Audit Commission, the Commission for Social Care Inspection, the Healthcare Commission, HM Inspectorate of Constabulary, HM Inspectorate of Prisons and HM Inspectorate of Probation to develop these proposals.

As part of Ofsted’s ongoing dialogue with local public services, there will be a series of joint regional consultation events in September and October 2008

As part of the consultation, we have developed a prototype web-reporting tool. This demonstrates how a new website might give people access to independent information on how well they’re being served by local public services, how this compares with elsewhere, and the prospects for improvement.

The document published in July represents an important stage in the joint consultation with stakeholders on the development of the comprehensive area assessment. We encourage you to contribute your views and respond to the consultation online. As part of our ongoing dialogue with local public services about comprehensive area assessment, there will be a series of joint regional consultation events in September and October 2008.

We'll shortly publish the proposals for the inspection of looked-after children and for safeguarding children, as well as more detail of how we’ll contribute to the comprehensive area assessment and the assessment of services for children, young people and adult learners.
